Core stability and integration are fundamental principles in yoga teachings, particularly within the lineage of Krishnamacharya and his renowned students, Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar. While these teachers developed their own distinct styles, they all emphasised the importance of a strong, integrated core—not just for physical strength, but for energetic and mental stability as well.
In North Sydney Yoga, we practice Ashtanga Yoga, as taught by Pattabhi Jois, and core stability becomes a dynamic force. This practice employs a method of controlled breathing combined with internal locks called bandhas—specifically Uddiyana Bandha (the abdominal lock) and Muladhara Bandha (the root lock)—to create both lightness and stability. These bandhas form the very essence of core engagement, supporting the spine during complex transitions and fast-paced sequences while allowing practitioners to seemingly float from one pose to the next. The focus centres on cultivating a powerful, internalised “fire” that purifies the body and channels energy throughout the practice.
B.K.S. Iyengar took a different approach to core integration, emphasising meticulous anatomical precision and alignment. In Iyengar Yoga, props such as blocks, straps, and blankets help students understand and achieve correct posture. Here, the core serves as the central pillar from which all limbs extend. Through precise alignment work, students learn to engage the deep stabilising muscles that support both spine and pelvis, creating what Iyengar called a “blueprint” for each pose. This more static yet equally powerful approach builds foundational strength while developing heightened body awareness.
Despite their stylistic differences, both lineages share a fundamental belief: our physical core reflects our internal state. A stable physical core promotes mental calm and focus, while an integrated practice weaves together breath, body, and mind, transcending mere physical exercise. This holistic understanding truly defines core stability in yoga—it serves as a foundation not only for the body but for living a balanced and stable life.
