Svadhyaya – The Grace of Self-Inquiry

In the Yoga Sutras, self-observation is known as Svadhyaya. In our Ashtanga community, the mat acts as a mirror; we don’t just study the sequence, we study the person performing it. At its core, Svadhyaya is the practice of observing your ego, habits, and reactions without judgment.

Applying Inquiry to Modern Life

  • On the Mat: When you reach your “edge” in a posture, notice your internal dialogue. Are you critical, or are you curious?
  • Off the Mat: Notice the urge to reach for your phone during moments of boredom, or reflect on whether a reaction to a stressful meeting was about the present moment or your own history.

The Gift of Regularity When practice transitions from casual to regular, it becomes a continuous flow of self-discovery. This consistency builds the stability needed to face life’s obstacles with clarity rather than reaction. By showing up for yourself with honesty, you transform your practice from a physical workout into a moving prayer.

Compassion in Observation This month, meet your limitations with radical kindness. Whether your hamstrings are tight or your mind is racing, remember that you are not your thoughts or your muscles—you are the steady observer behind them. Finding compassion on the mat allows us to carry that same softness into our homes and our community.
