Show up with dedication, and without expectation: Vairagya on and off the mat

You know that moment—deep in a challenging pose, muscles trembling, when you realize you’re trying far harder than necessary? This is where Vairagya enters, not as defeat, but as wisdom.

Vairagya—non-attachment—paired with Abhyasa (steady practice) creates the heartbeat of Yoga: we show up with devotion, yet release our grip on outcomes. We commit fully, yet hold it lightly.

Maybe you’ve been working toward Bhujapidasana or Kapotasana for months. Some days your body opens beautifully; other days it resists despite your best effort. Vairagya asks: can you practice with the same love regardless? Can you honor the body you have today?

This isn’t giving up—it is intelligent discernment. The maturity to know healthy striving from harmful grasping, discipline from obsession.

As Sri K. Pattabhi Jois reminded us: “Practice and all is coming.” Not force. Not attachment. Practice.

In day-to-day life, Vairagya becomes even more vital. The world tells us to go harder, but yoga whispers: everything changes. Think about Savasana after Primary Series—we don’t cling to the feeling of strength. We rest, release, and trust the work has been done.

This month as we gather as a community, let’s practice Vairagya with the same commitment we bring to our Sun Salutations. Notice where you’re trying too hard. Soften around expectations while staying devoted to the path.

Your mat awaits. Your community supports you. And the practice—as always—continues.
