Monthly Focus: Tapas …

We often speak of Tapas as the heat we generate during Mysore class—the sweat dripping onto the mat, the steady Ujjayi breath, and the determination required to catch a heel or hold a challenging posture. Yet, in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Tapas is far more than physical exertion. It is the second Niyama (personal observance) and a foundational pillar of Kriya Yoga (the yoga of action).

Derived from the Sanskrit root tap, meaning “to burn” or “to make hot,” Tapas is the inner friction that burns away physical, mental, and emotional impurities.

The Art of Cleansing Body and Mind Systems

Patanjali directly addresses the transformative power of this practice in Sutra 2.43:

“Kaya indriya siddhir ashuddhi kshayat tapasah”

(Through the destruction of impurities by Tapas, perfection of the body and sense organs is attained.)

When we intentionally lean into the discipline of our practice, Tapas acts as a biological and spiritual refining fire:

  • Cleansing the Physical Body (Kaya): The physical heat (agni) built through vinyasabandhas, and sustained posture purges toxins from tissues and organs, builds stamina, and lightens the physical vessel.
  • Refining the Senses (Indriyas): Staying present when discomfort arises teaches the mind not to react impulsively to pleasure or pain. This restraint cleanses our sensory habits, granting us control over our cravings and distractions.
  • Purifying the Mind (Chitta): Tapas burns through samskaras—the deep-seated mental patterns and conditioning that keep us stuck in old habits.

Tapas is not self-punishment or pushing through joint pain; true Tapas is balanced discipline (sadhana) held with loving awareness. It is showing up on your mat on the mornings you would rather stay in bed, maintaining steady breath when an asana feels overwhelming, and meeting your edge with calm presence.

This month, observe where you can cultivate a bit more conscious heat in your life. Allow the discipline of your daily practice to burn away what no longer serves you, leaving behind a clear body, a steady mind, and an unshakeable spirit.
