Mysore

Practice

In a Mysore style class you practice a sequence of postures at your own pace, in rhythm with your breath. Whilst in a group you can individually explore your yoga practice very much in your own timing, so being able to discover the deeper wonders of your own body and psychological make-up. The teacher gives you adjustments, corrections, and takes you further into the Ashtanga Series when you are ready.

Prerequisite

Mysore style classes are suitable for practitioners of any level. It is helpful though if you have completed beginners level 1 course/courses, or if you regularely have attended level 1 casual classes.

The Source

This method of being given posture by posture on an individual level is called Mysore style, because this is the way it is traditionally taught in Mysore, South India by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who is still teaching at the age of 90, together with his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy.

Many Western students flock to the AYRIAstanga Yoga Research Institute to get a taste of the source and the original teachings of Astanga Vinyasa Yoga. For about 40 years initially set in the suburb of Lakshmipuram, the yoga shala could hold at the most 12 students at a tight squeeze. Students sometimes waited for an hour or more on the steps leading up to the second floor until a practice space became available for them. Therefore the school has now moved to Gokulum into purposefully built premises with ample space.

NOTE: We don’t practice early morning! Mysore style classes on days of Full Moon or New Moon. For further explanation see our Moonday page. Evening classes are held as usual on Moondays.

Next Group Practices:
Monday 30 June 6.00-7.30am
Thursday 31 July 6.00-7.30am
Friday 29 August 6.00-7.30am
